Benefits

Climatesox are knitted with small loops at the top of each sock which can be connected with a tiny plastic link. The links make it easy to connect sock mates so that they stay together in the laundry process while allowing the entire garment surface to be cleaned. No more mate loss or sock sorting. The linking system also allows the socks to be hang-dried, by-passing the energy intensive drier and preserving the elastic yarns in the sock, which drier heat can gradually degrade. But the links also eliminate the time wasted in sorting socks from the laundry and the money loss from sometimes losing mates. The time saved could then be productively used by hanging out the rest of your laundry, on an indoor/outdoor folding rack, saving 3 to 6 kwh of energy per load.

Energy saving computations: Half a million households hang-drying one load of laundry per week over 52 weeks--see calculations--saves the energy equivalent to the annual output of a medium-sized wind farm but with no construction costs or raw materials, no maintenance or salvage costs, no transmission line construction or transmission line loss and NO dead birds or bats—a simple, golden opportunity for YOU to fight climate change. Additionally, hang drying outside allows sunlight to kill bacteria and accelerate drying. Hang drying can be done anywhere--like traveling-- without the need for clips because the socks are linked. Cli-Mates, and most quality socks, are designed to wick perspiration away from the wearer’s feet, which also allows them to hang dry in a matter of hours. Sunlight or the breeze of a small fan accelerates drying.

Calculations of annual energy savings from hang drying versus wind farm output:

Households hang drying: 500,000 x 3.5 kwh x 52 days per year / 1000 = 91,000 Mwhr/yr.

Medium-sized wind farm: 20 turbines x 2 Mw each x 25% (average output) x 365 days x 24 hours = 87,600 Mwhr/yr.

Accessories for hang drying: a collapsible drying rack, pants clamps and coat hangers.
